The program used to generate the machine-specific ID for Solid also crashes in
Wine. I wonder if that indicates that getting the machine ID is what crashes
our program in wine as well...

Is there interest in having a look at this ID-generating program by Solid? I
can attach it (I assume that that shouldn't be an issue since you can get it
for free on their development portal) if there is interest.
