Hi John:

My advice is work on a Wine bug that is blocking something of
interest to you since that interest will provide important focus and
motivation.

For example, if you are interested in free software distributions for
Windows like Cygwin or MSYS2, you might want to work on one or more
bugs that are blocking those from working on Wine **after** reading a
summary of the current situation at
<https://github.com/msys2/MSYS2-packages/issues/682>

(particularly the remarks starting at

"<corinna>      the old method up to XP/2K3 is not available anymore"

.)

Note, I prefer to stick to my own free software development rather
than work on Wine, but I do follow the Cygwin and MSYS2 situation
because as a Linux user I would like to test my free software using
the free software libraries in those distributions for the Windows
platform without paying a Microsoft tax.  And there are others with
similar interests as well such as "fracting" (Qian Hong) who got MSYS2
to work reasonably well under Wine-staging before the post-XP change
to MSYS2 that he refers to in that discussion.  However, there is
obviously a huge range of software available on Windows besides the
software (e.g., the installers) supporting those two software
distributions so if your interest is in something else (e.g., some
game) you should follow your interest rather than mine!
