Advice for LaserSquadNemesis

Hi folks, I`ve been trying with varied success to get LaserSquadNemesis
(www. .com) to work and I now seek some advice on how to get a bit more out
it. LSN has two modes of operation. DIRECTDRAW_2D and DD8_3D . It's
basically an isometric game in the style of the old Lasersquad and UFO/Xcom
so its not heavy on the polygons. It also uses SDL. My setup is a gentoo
box, Radeon9800Pro running 3.2.5 drivers. DIRECTDRAW_2D runs on Winex3.1
(but we don't wanna use that) but with the latest wine (1016) I get the
following output (sound is off);

My config settings are pretty much defaults, Win98 set with Desktop ON (off
produces a hanging pause).

Does anyone have any advice on where to go from here?
