@Martin Gregorie
Thank you for your reply:

Additional thought: has the installer set the execution bit(s) on
executable files?
[...]
Yes, they are all executable for everyone.

Reinstalled the software to the "programs" and root of C: No success.
All 'important' filenames are 8.3 (readme's, manuals etc. are longer.)
Even switched to all capital letters (thanks 'rename') without success.
Checked on my old windows pc, the filenames on windows, like in wine
all are lower case (tbxyxy.exe) and written identically.

Is there a program like "windows-filemon" for linux/wine where you can check wich files
are being tried to open in the background?

I know, but the market for learning software for sign language is quite thin, I fear...
Software for deaf/mute people without sound and yet the requirements says you need
a soundcard.
Not able to use spaces in folder names and the default folder for the software contains
one...

Well they offer a new version 3.0 (mine is 2.1), I think I will ask them if those strange
requirements are still valid.
And if they are, I can still copy the 8.3 avi-files to harddisk, rename them, have a script
open them randomly and have a vocabulary-test.

Regards,
Chris
