How did you install Office? If you followed one of the many outdated howtos floating about that call for installing a bunch of things with winetricks, delete or rename the wineprefix and reinstall without any tweaks. 

Don't install the PDF extension; there's a open bug saying it causes Word to crash when trying to open or save files. http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17464

Permissions problems with the folder shouldn't crash Word; you should just get a message that the folder is not accessible. 

Run it from a terminal following the directions here: http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#run_from_terminal
Post everything in the terminal, including the command you use to run it.
